Gliffics is hip hop. New York hip hop, to be exact, and that's an important distinction these days.
Ok, we got the genre and location out of the way. On to the good stuff. Gliffics is really just one dude, and he's self-made through and through. A dyed in the wool NYC hustler who can rap his ass off in one breath and sell you some official Gliffics rolling papers in the other.
Whether its his music, his videos, his clothing line or his live sets, it all comes from him. No label backing, just pure sweat and hustle. Which is why we identified with him.
"Call Me Crazy" is an amped up, high-BPM JAM, backed by an Illmind (Kanye West, Ludacris, KRS-ONE) beat and led by a voice that sounds like a more "conscious" Curren$y. "Conscious" like "awake", not like Talib Kweli in '98. A little Camp Lo too. Which we all need more of in our life.
That's just the sound though. Lyrically, we get a different angle on the "typical" hip hop devices. Gliffics definitely lived "the life", played "the game", but he's a rare one who actually made it out unscathed, and his music seems to be a simultaneous admission of guilt and celebration for finding a better path.
The image we created for this project reflects the many personas within a personality like Gliffics. "I contain multitudes", as someone once said. The image you see is one exposure, shot in Brooklyn, with multiple flashes and colored gels. It took a very long time to get this shot but I think we nailed it.
In addition to "Call Me Crazy", Gliffics was cool enough to supply us with an exclusive instrumental called "Excellence".
